Andrew has over 40 years in legal practice during which he has acquired considerable expertise in many areas of law.
Andrew has been an Accredited Business Law Specialist since 1992 when he was among the first batch to receive such accreditation.
Andrew's main areas of practice are:
- Business law generally including sale and purchase of businesses (including licensed businesses) and business structures, company and trust formation and advice;
- Preparation and advice on shareholder, unitholder and partnership agreements, and advice on shareholder, unitholder and partnership disputes;
- Business succession planning;
- Preparation and advice on distribution and supply agreements;
- Franchising;
- Commercial and retail property law including joint venture development agreements, commercial, industrial, and retail leasing;
- Estate planning and complex wills.
Among the range of clients whom Andrew has represented in recent years are owners and developers of neighbourhood shopping and bulky goods centres.
Apart from displaying the necessary period of practice experience to obtain accreditation a specialist must pass a comprehensive examination process testing technical knowledge, writing and practical advocacy skills, and accreditation needs to be renewed every 3 years by the provision of suitable evidence of the maintenance of the required standards of an accredited specialist.
He was appointed as a Notary Public in 1996.
Andrew has for a number of years been actively involved in various committees of the Law Institute of Victoria, being:
- Business Law Committee since its inception in 1988;
- Business Law Dispute Resolution Committee since its inception in 1992;
- Business Law Advisory Committee from 1992 until 1997.
This is the specialist committee which conducts the examination and assessment process for the admission of new accredited business law specialists.
Andrew's passions away from the office (apart from family) have been the Carlton Football Club and horse racing and breeding.
In football, Andrew played more than 50 games with Carlton in the VFL Reserves (now known as the VFL) in the 1960's and over 100 games with Werribee in the VFA (now known as the VFL).
Andrew has enjoyed considerable success (and also disappointment) in horse racing with a number of horses, the most notable of which was Salamander (whom he owned jointly with one of our other partners Terry Shiels) who rated several Group 1 successes and notable photo finish seconds in each of the Victoria Derby in 1976 and the Melbourne Cup in 1979.
